Do your cases have a freshly applied Finish of any kind? Oil, Stain or Varathane? Does it still smell? Are the shots fully enclosed in the case or are they open to outside air?
If so, Residual solvents in a closed environment would coat nearby objects (a process known as Hydrocarbon Plating). Such solvents "Bloom" from the product as it dries and could easily cause irreversible paint damage. They are after all designed to dissolve stuff. The process would continue as long as any solvent remains. Since Wood is pourous and expands or contracts with Temperature and Humidity, minute amounts may be released until the solvent is fully fixed. That may take several weeks. In the case of most products, wiping with a clean cloth and fresh water removes most solvent blooms. Perhaps not the best news, but its a thought.
