What I have heard is similar to what is posted. I heard that the value of a pistol cartridge was 25 cents and the cost of a serving of whiskey was 25 cents. Many times a cowboy wanting a drink would not have any money but would use a bullet to pay for a serving of whiskey which came to be called a "shot" of whiskey and by association, a shot glass.
