I have seen an old Libbey Glass catalog somewhere, and in it, they explain the meaning of pattern of gaps and dashes -- because you would purchase items based on the pattern. The pattern indicates the volume of the liquid in the glass up to that line. I remember there being a 3/4 ounce pattern, and maybe a 7/8 ounce pattern.

: I have a plain shot glasw with a measuring line near the rim. At one point the line has a gap. On the other side it has a dashed gap. Why is the gap and the dashed marks there?
