Some Dude is right. Nowadays glass panes are made by pouring the glass over a basin of meoltn metal, mostly tin. In earlier days there were no fancy ovens like that, and glass was blown by means of a pipe into a bulb, that was made as large, and therefore as thin as possible. Next the lower half was cut off, and the remaning half sphere was whirled around until it became an almost flat circle. This was the pane of glass from which smaller panes were cut, and the place where they broke of the blowing pipe forms the alleged nipple. Most of the nippled' panes you see however are not that old, they are seen as a nice antique twist to a new house that makes an impression of being old and original.
