I have read that the numbers on the base of a glass are supposed to have a code that lets you know when the glass was made: the first digit is the time of year (by quarter) and the second is supposed to be the month of that quarter.

I have a problem with this definition, because it does not explain single-digit numbers, nor does it explain when the first digit is larger than 4 or when the second digit is larger than 3.

I think that the numbers are a quality control measure for telling which mold the glass came from -- if there are a consistent number of "flawed" glasses with the same number, they know which mold to look at, wheras if there were no numbers, they would have to inspect every mold.

If your glasses are just plain glass, with no added design, they are worth about $1.00 or less.

: I have 4 depression tall plain shot glasses that where my grandmothers. In cleaning them I noticed a mark on the bottom. It turns out the marks are numbers. Can someone help me identify these and let me know what they might be worth?
