Good question. I try to catalog my shots in a little pocket notebook that I can carry with me. It's often kept me from buying duplicates. I'm way behind on updating my catalog right now though. I just seem to buy them much faster than I can write them up.

Of course, there are some shots that I deliberately buy duplicates of. For example, the Ridgewood versus Ridgemont Reserve shots are highly collectible because of the history of the brand. Any time I find one, I buy it.

I don't often buy shots in sets from sellers, but I will buy a duplicate that way if the price is right and I'm getting something else that I really want in the set. I recently bought a cocktail set with two martini glasses and a shaker just to get the two Stoli shots that were in it.

I guess anyone with a collection of any size has to take some measures to avoid buying duplicates, but sometimes there's a good reason for buying them. And other times, you just have to buy somethng you don't want in order to get what you do want.
