As much as we collectors like to call certain shotglasses "standard," in the real world there is no such thing as a "standard" shot.

Even if you want to call a standard US shot one ounce, there are many different sizes and shape of one ounce shotglass. One type of one ounce glass is typically called a cheater because it has an extra thick base, and is the same size and shape as a double (but only holds one ounce.

Some places use two ounce shots, while others use partially-filled whiskey glasses when you order a shot.

In many European countries, a shot is only 2cl or about 2/3 ounce. The tall, thin shooters made popular by the Hard Rock Cafe hold much more than one ounce.

The typical movie uses props gathered by the property master and his team. The exact shape and/or style of the glass is not usually defined in the script, and if this is the case, the prop team gets to "go shopping." If they do not know much about drinking, they go for "standard" shots. If they find something "cool and different" in their travels, they will use those in the movie.

: Hello all- I have noticed that shot glasses used in bar scenes and movies seem to be smaller than the standard 1oz glass shotglasses used in bars in real life? What gives? Anyone know why they do this? Or is this just a movie phenomenon like using a "rain scene" in the middle of the movie to foreshadow a big plot change?

: Thanks for your help!
