I believe a better answer is that it is a "mold number"
Each "batch" of glasses is made up of X glasses.
Each mold in the batch is given a different number, from 1 to X.
When the completed glasses hit quality control, if there is a defect, they can go back to the mold with the same number as the defective glass.
