My name is Mark and I am the person who runs shotglass.org. One of the reasons that I set up the website was to give me a way to contact other collectors.
You asked about the average collector: Most collectors "specialize" on a certain type of glass, such as ones that they have purchased to commemorate the trip (I call these Souvenir glasses, many other people call these Tourist glasses), glasses from a particular brand of whiskey (such as Jack Daniels or Jim Beam) or from theme restaurants such as The Hard Rock Cafe.
There are very few collectors who have over 1,000 glasses, and there are many who do not have more than 100. The size of the collection is often limited by what you choose to collect. Unless you travel extensively, a collection of glasses from the places you have been will rarely have 1,000 glasses. I know of one guy who only collects glasses from the "world's fairs" and major "expositions" so it is unlikely he will have more than 100.
I am a little unusual as collectors go, in that I collect all types of shotglasses and have over 9,000 glasses in my collection. (I'm close to the World Record of 8,411 different glasses -- but I do not know what definition of "unique" they use -- the guy with the record collection has over 12,000 glasses) I do not know if anybody else has over 9,000 glasses, different or not.
You are an "unusual collector" because you are from "across the pond" -- it is by belief that the majority of collectors are in the United States. I have only communicated with three or four other individuals worldwide who were not from the US...
