The description sounds like you are looking for a glass with a "lithophane" image -- the image is molded into an opaque (usually white or cream colored) glass, and it "appears" when you look through the glass toward a light source.
These show up on ebay quite often.
Another possibility is a newer style of glass with an image in the base (such as here: http://www.huntermfg.com/bottomsup.html ) If they color of the glass around the base, you cannot see the image from the outside of the glass. (this idea is quite old -- there are glasses like this from before prohibition, but they have only come back into use recently)

: I have a friends 40th Birthday coming up and for years he has mentioned when he was on holiday in France and while drink shots, the glasses had pictures in the bottom that you could only see once you had downed the drink and looked straight into the glass.
