It sounds like the glass you are looking for is a shape called Depression tall (here's an image of a glass of that shape

The band was added to the glass to stop it from falling through a hole in a metal plate that held 6 glasses in a circle around a centrap dispenser that would let you pump the liquid into the different glasses
