There are a couple of possible explanations about how the name came about, but none have absolute proof of being "first"

One of the explanations was that there was a small glass kept on the table when eating game (birds, deer, etc) that was killed with a shotgun. As you found pieces of shot in your meal you would put the bits into the "shot glass"

Another possible source from the name was the practice of "dramming" which we would today call "doing a shot" After you drank your liquor you would slam the glass down and the sound that it made was like the sound of a gun "shot" -- therefore the glass you were using was s "shot glass"

The single word "shotglass" did not appear in print until the 1950's -- I think it was in a detective novel (I have the reference from the Oxford English Dictionary somewhere)
