I take the "glass" in shotglass to be a generic term -- like when someone asks for a glass of milk. If you ask for a glass of milk at someone's house, you are really asking for something less than a full bottle or carton. You really dont care if you get it in a ceramic coffee mug, or a plactic cup, or in something made of glass.

When it comes to collecting shotglasses, I do not care if they are made out of glass, ceramic, metal, plastic, wood or horn -- if they are small drinking glasses, they'll probably end up in my collection.

I know that plastic glasses are very popular with the alcohol manufacturers, but they are giving them away, and usually giving them to bars and clubs, so for the same amount of money they can give away more plastic ones than glass ones. I have seen many people do the shot in the cheap plastic "giveaway" and then drop it on the floor, where it gets quickly stepped on and broken -- people do not seem to take them seriously. (When it comes to adding an item to my collection, I prefer to spend my money on things that are not made of plastic, but I stll have some plastic shotglasses in my collection)

For Souvenirs and places like the Hard Rock I do not see them getting away from glass anytime soon -- glass is still a fairly cheap material, and it looks better (in my opinion) than plastic. Metal is showing up at some tourist locations and has been used for the triple crown races for a couple of years, but metal, like plastic, although lighter than glass, scratches too easily.

Manufacturers are always looking for ways to make their product different from the other guy's. The marketing departments at places like the theme restaurants are always coming up with new ways to separate you from your money. I think that metal is just another gimmick.
